May 3rd - Adire Oniko Tie and Dye Resist w/ Kibibi Ajanku
Oniko comes from “kó”, meaning to tie or gather. This method involves tying sections of the fabric tightly with raffia, twine, or bands to prevent those parts from absorbing dye. Common motifs are made by tying stones, seeds, or pebbles into the fabric or by folding, pleating, and binding the cloth. After dyeing (traditionally with indigo from Elu plants), the bound areas remain lighter or white when untied, forming distinctive patterns.
May 3rd and 4th: Adire Wings Wall Hanging w/ Jumoke Ajanku
The Adire Wings Wall Hanging features detailed and symmetrical designs. Patterns are drawn onto the fabric using either a stencil or freehand drawing. The design areas are tied with raffia, string, or bands to resist the dye. The fabric is submerged in natural indigo dye, often multiple times, to achieve deep, rich colors.

Please arrive no more than 15 minutes in advance of your scheduled session.

All necessary supplies will be provided

If you are registered for a workshop using indigo dye techniques, feel free to bring an additional 1-3 pounds of 100% cotton fabric or clothing to use during the workshop.

Consenting to the waiver and release means images, audio recordings, and videos that include you may be used in the following ways:

These materials may be edited, published, and distributed without further approval, and no compensation will be provided. Your consent releases Ajanku Art Studio and its partners from any liability related to the use of these recordings.
